@flyingtorpedo go watch all the post apoctolyptic movies that are comeing out lol, book of eli, the road…. go watch them and then come back and tell me that a garden wouldnt be a good idea
Tomato seed saving tip: Use all of the goop from your tomato for fermentation. If you’re saving grape/cherry or other tiny tomatoes use the goop from multiple tomatoes. If you don’t use enough tomato goop it just won’t ferment right and you’ll fail to save any seeds.
@survivalistboards The seeds usually bought at stores are those of hybrids, they will eventually mutate to one of their parents after one or two generations, their parents wont be exact.y what you planted before, maybe smaller fruit or not appealing taste, but if youre in it to survive, you can still eat the random fruit. Organic seeds are those that have heritage of being appetizing, growing well, fruit size, and other variables.
Than you have to worry about stock piling containers and soil and fertilizer other wise all those seeds wont do you any good. Of course I am speaking end of the world scenario here in which case 99.99% isn’t going to help you anyway. But for that .01% at least you have a better chance of survival than the next guy. And seeds are cheap so why not?
. Now saying that if there was some kind of war or dust bowl or biblical situation and for what ever reason your vegie garden was destroyed as well as every one elses then yes having a stock pile of seeds just in case would be good. But then you have to worry about is the ground safe enough to grow on.
I am not so sure about stocking up on seeds. I mean if we are to take advantage of our gardens they need to be done before a disaster occurs. If people are worried about oil running out and the trucks can not get the food to the stores and after a few days they are out of food… it is a little too late to worry about starting your garden then since it takes weeks if not months to get any thing back from it. You need to start your gardens now, not later.
@flyingtorpedo Inflation on food was 18 percent april 2009 to april 2010…unemployment is only getting better because 1000s are running out of benefits…a survival garden helps people redirect income from the purchase of food to pay other bills without changing their lifestyle…so i guess it all depends on how you define survival..stockpiling seeds insures you have seeds if your financial situation changes over a 2 or three year period…investment minimal
@flyingtorpedo american grocery stores are just 72 hrs from being empty…a oil crisis or one of many other situations could create a situation where groceries were not available…just last week in tennessee we has massive floods…here in Hickman county we do not have ANY potable water and will not for months…i am prepared…i dont need red cross or government …thousands others are dependent….
@magicster123 Its a Dollar General Store…..corporate owned….
when dollar store puts out their seeds in the spring they are 4 packs for a quarter…as spring progresses they get marked down to 10 for a dollar and finally a penny a pack on what ever is left ….they usually dont throw them out because they dont last long enough to get thrown out…things like carrots, raddishes and chard are usually plentiful at the end…stock up on things like beans and squash early because they sell out
@centervilletn i have a few questions:
-were they marked as a penny a pack or did you have to ask the manager
-was this a privately owned store or something like a dollarama/dollar tree
-do stores like dollarama throw out their seeds at the end of spring?
-what time is a good time to ask
I reality 1 should now be planting a garden using heirloom open pollination varieties and saving the seed NOT waiting until the disaster(whatever that may be) is upon U., so U are in the grove of planting harvesting storing; preparing & eating what you grow. Also make some kind of plan with farmer who grows heirloom cereal grains, assuming U don’t have the land area to do so yourself.
they have better deals on ebay. there’s a seller that sells 63+ varieties for 46.00, i believe.. it’s the “x-large garden” pack. her ebay ID is kims-yesterdays-favorites. also, tomatoseedlady has some very nice deals.. she sells 22,500 seeds for around the same price.. both sellers have complete garden packages available and are better priced than other places online.
Seed viability is only as good as the storage. 1st dating the packets is useless as some can be several yrs old already at time of sale. 2nd hybrids legally must be listed as hybrids. 3rd get Seed to Seed (Susan Ashworth) and pack that too. Has info for saving most seed (isolation for strain, processing, seed viability in storage) 4th grow and save your own seed as those will be the most viable/fresh.
Variety is good. Knowing to keep the varieties going is better.
k i am a bit confused i have heard don’t use plastic, use plastic,, seeds need oxegyen but yet when i guy my seeds they are mostly in small plastic bags. if you don’t keep them in a plastic of some kind they will get more moisture which i heard can make the seed not germinate. only way to insure no moisture is to have a air tight seal.. so what is the best way.. looks to me like there is many.
You should get some that you can buy cheap in large quantity such as corn, wheat, barley, etc. Can get a huge qty for under a hundred bucks. A simple grinder and you have bread for winter and enough to plant come spring.
Hi I just bought mine from be prepared now. net They were only $44.99 with free shipping. It has 27 varieties and is sealed in a Mylar Bag. It was the best deal I found on the internet and the variety is great!!
Seeds need oxygen if they dont have it they will die. The Mylar is great they are like a big flexable can it keep moisture and light out. But the seeds NEED oxygen!!!

@flyingtorpedo – have you read your history, and how people starved to death during the black death of 1348 – 1350?

In this past half century, humans have broken from then norm of stockpiling food and seed. What hes doing isn’t so strange in the larger scheme.
